MORGANTOWN — For members of the VFW Auxiliary and VFW Post 5837 in Butler County, service to veterans goes hand in hand with service to the entire community.
Through a wide range of programs, partnerships and outreach efforts, the organization works year-round to honor veterans, support local families and provide opportunities for young people throughout Butler County.
One of the group’s most visible efforts takes place each year around Memorial Day. Partnering with ACE Hardware, volunteers place American flags at more than 1,700 veteran graves across 77 cemeteries in Butler County, ensuring those who served are properly remembered and honored.
The VFW also plays a strong role in youth programs across the community. The organization serves as the charter sponsor for the Butler County Boy Scouts, assisting with annual flag preparations and proper flag retirement ceremonies for the area. Members also partner with the Butler County High School JROTC, providing weekly guidance for the program’s shooting teams and preparing meals for cadets several times throughout the year.

Community events are another important part of the organization’s outreach. The annual “Cookies with the Commander” event has become a favorite local tradition, providing more than 350 children with free toys, jackets, boots, hats and gloves. The event is made possible through partnerships with local supporters, including Delta Faucet.
Members also work closely with Hershel House’s Woodbury Blacksmithing School, helping provide local veterans with opportunities to participate in traditional blacksmithing experiences that honor historic craftsmanship and military heritage.
Supporting veterans with benefits and resources remains a central mission of the post. VFW Service Officer Rick Brown has been especially active, assisting six local veterans this year in receiving 100 percent VA disability benefits, representing nearly $250,000 in assistance for those veterans and their families.
Post and auxiliary members regularly provide meals to veterans at Morgantown Care & Rehab and also assist the Kentucky Veterans Alliance in Bowling Green with weekly donations of food and clothing.

In addition, the organization has hosted several benefit events over the past year to assist local families in need. These include fundraisers to help the child of a veteran who received a heart transplant, to assist a longtime veteran supporter with medical and funeral expenses, and most recently to help a local family whose infant twins are facing heart transplant needs.
Education and recognition programs also remain a strong focus for the organization. The VFW sponsors the Voice of Democracy essay program, Patriot’s Pen competition, student art contests, ROTC awards and public safety recognitions, including Police Officer of the Year and other community safety awards. The organization also currently offers two scholarships for Butler County High School seniors.
Members frequently visit nursing homes to spend time with local veterans and participate in community service efforts, including a reading program in the elementary school. The post also partners with The Mission to help distribute meals during the holidays and will soon assist with building shelves and organizing storage areas at the facility.
From honoring veterans’ service to supporting youth and families, members of the VFW Auxiliary Granville Allen Post 5837 continue to demonstrate their commitment to Butler County through countless volunteer hours and community partnerships.
Their work reflects a shared mission — ensuring veterans are honored, families are supported and the spirit of service remains strong across the community.
