Kyrock Elementary will be housed in a new building in August 2027. As confirmed by Edmonson Schools Superintendent Brian Alexander, Kyrock will have a new school built to house grades K-6. Alexander said he hopes the new school will be ready for students in August 2027.
The new building, which will be built across from the now Kyrock School, will hold up to 550 students. The current school holds around 300 students. Alexander said it will feature state-of-the-art security which will allow the school to be locked down with one push of a button. Keeping safety in mind the school will have two entrances. The front parking lot with entrance from HWY 259 will be for staff, visitors and car riders’ use. The back entrance from Blackgold Road will be used for the school buses. This should alleviate some congestion and dangers with drop-offs and pick-ups.
The new school will also feature a walking trail that can be used for cross-country for older students. Along with a new gym, the lunchroom will have a gym floor and nets for archery teams to be able to use. A new playground will also be added. A new sewer will be running to Kyrock from Brownsville to take care of the current issues. Edmonson Water District will help with the installation.
Alexander expressed a big thank you to the family of Joe Don Patton for working with the school district for the purchase of the 61 acres. The current school has 11 acres of property. It was cheaper for the school district to purchase the new land and build there than it was to tear down the current Kyrock Elementary. Alexander said he would have hated to see the current Kyrock school demolished because it is such a big part of the community. He hopes the old building will have a positive impact on the community in the future.
South Edmonson will be expanding to hold grades up to 6th also. It is a smaller project that is expected to be completed in a year to a year and a half. The 5/6th Center will be transitioned out. The 5/6th Center was built in 1959 and has been the home to the High School and Middle school in the past. Alexander would like to see the building used in a productive way, the same as the old Brownsville Elementary.
The project’s cost will be covered by bonds sold by the district. This is a regular occurrence for every district. Recently the bonds for the high school renovation and middle school auditorium were paid off which leaves the district to move forward with the new school and upgrades.
Alexander would like to thank the Board of Education members for their vision and commitment to be able to do this. He also wanted to thank the people of the community for having faith in them to do the very best for the kids they can.
Alexander feels the board has a good plan for the future of the Edmonson School system and all future students.
