The year’s Farm Safety/Agriculture Career Fair was held on April 19th at the Country Charm Event Barn at the Hawkins’ Farms. Each high school student was provided the time to tour the many exhibits and learn about the various aspects of agriculture and the array of jobs associated with it.

The students were presented with a variety of demonstrations of dangers and safety procedures used while farming. They were also given presentations pertaining to safety within the home and out in the community.

This year’s exhibitors surpassed the previous years. According to MCHS teacher, Mrs. Lynn Hawkins, there were 46 exhibitors set up for the event. Exhibitors were set up inside the event barn and outside among the many farm buildings and machinery.

These are just a few of the exhibits: electrical safety, equine care, cattle branding, cattle health, boat safety, farm insurance, machinery safety, animal nutrition, land management and conservation, forestry, and fire safety.

Teachers toured along with approximately 280 students from the high school as they led groups working their way through all the exhibits. The students were provided information and were able to ask questions about the numerous jobs associated with the many aspects of agriculture.

It was a good day despite the light sprinkles of rain and hopefully the students now realize that farming isn’t just about raising cattle, planting, and harvesting crops.

Students were also treated to a lunch of hotdogs, hamburgers, and should grilled right on-site.

It was a day of learning for the students thanks to the Hawkins family, the teachers, and all the exhibitors who took time out of their busy schedules to present this important information to the young people of Metcalfe County.
