A local student will participate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at the nation’s capital.

Jordyn Bethel, a freshman at Caverna High School, will spend time this summer in Washington D.C. as part of the Western Kentucky University Educational Talent Search (WKU ETS) program.

The WKU ETS program identifies qualified youth who have the potential to succeed in higher education and provides them with academic and career counseling opportunities.

To apply for the program, Caverna’s ETS coordinator, Rae Collins, sent an invitation to every ETS member asking who would be interested in the D.C. trip. Bethel and others completed the application, submitted their GPA, chose two career fields of interest, and answered two essay questions.

Bethel said she is looking forward to the trip.

“While there, we will be touring different places, including The Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol, Georgetown University, and others,” Bethel shared.

The 14-year-old stated that having an opportunity like this, “means the world to me.”

“Coming from a small school like Caverna, opportunities are limited only because people think we can’t do certain things,” Bethel said. “I’m excited to go and represent my school…I’ve never been (to Washington D.C.), so I can’t wait to sight-see and take lots of pictures to send to my mom. I’m really excited about going to the Botanical Gardens & Georgetown University though.”

Bethel is very active in a variety of sports and school organizations. She is a member of BETA, Leaders of the Future, Gifted and Talented, ETS, and JAG. She also plays basketball, softball, volleyball, and runs track.

“I am very thankful for this opportunity,” Bethel concluded. “Shout out to my GT teacher Jessi Hampton and our ETS coordinator Rae Collins. I am blessed with the best.”
