Maddux Miracle Propels Hornets in District

Playing Sunday evening, the Hornets opened their first-round game against Monroe County confidently. Behind a 26-point performance from Cade Button and a dominating 21-point and 18-rebound performance from Hudson Jessie, the Hornets led most of the first half, taking a 36-32 lead into the break.

The Falcons rallied back after the break, holding a narrow lead for most of the second half. With three seconds remaining, down 65-66, Metcalfe’s Ben Shirley looked to inbound the ball on the near side of half court. Ben hit a cutting Maddux Garrett, who drove a nail through the heart of Falcons fans as he knocked down a game-winning three while time expired.

Carrying the momentum of Maddux’s last second heroics, the Hornets picked up Tuesday night against Russell County exactly where they left off, opening the game with a 10-0 run. Dazing the Laker squad from the tip, the game was never close. The Hornets breezed past a stunned goliath, 68-51. Cade led the Hornets for a second night with 28 points and Hudson dropped another double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

With a trip to Diddle secured, the Hornets hoped to finish their run with a district championship Friday night against the Cumberland County Panthers. A standing room only crowd was witness to a heavy weight bout, as the Hornets and Panthers squared off in the finals for the first time since 1997. The first half was back and forth with the Hornets taking a 26-22 led into the half.

Maddux knocked down two big threes to start the second half offensively for the Hornets. Metcalfe’s offense continued to produce, as Ben hit a three from the left corner, to go up 37-29 and force a Cumberland timeout. Taking a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter, the Hornets were poised for one final run at the district championship. The fortune would not favor Metcalfe in the fourth, as the Panthers would score the next twelve points of the contest. Despite a late run from the Hornets, the night ended with a 46-49 victory for the Panthers.

In a week filled with game-winning heroics, dominating performances, and narrow defeat, the Hornets come out the other side 16th district tournament runners-ups, prepared to start anew in Diddle at the 4th region tournament.
