An open house was held on Sunday, Feb. 4, for the unveiling of the new construction at South Green Elementary where many gathered including former and current staff of the school and parents with students enrolled there. Following a short presentation with comments, everyone was welcome to explore the new portion of the facility in a self-guided tour.
“It’s truly a great day to be a Scottie,” GIS Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp said in opening remarks.
The new building encompasses 50,000 sq. ft. on two floors featuring 22 classrooms, a collaborative working space of the Discovery Hub/Media Center, a STEAM/art room, a music room, and state-of-the-art equipment for instruction.
Muhlenkamp commented on the design before the open house and also gave comments during the 3 p.m. presentation, “The design encompasses flexible instructional space, providing opportunities for the growth and expansion of learning to meet the ever changing needs of our community and nation.”
“It’s an impressive structure and I commend the board for their forward thinking in helping design a timeless structure to enhance the experiences we can provide our students as we prepare them to be a Glasgow graduate,” Muhlenkamp said.
SGE’s original existing structure was built in 1987 and constructed to replace Liberty Street Elementary. Next year, the current building will house the Glasgow Preschool Academy and SGE Kindergarten classes in addition to several administrative offices.
Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects in consultant with Shrout Tate Wilson Engineers and American Engineers designed SGE’s new space and Alliance Corporation as the Construction Manager for the project.
