Chamber of Commerce

Herb Sparks was honored to introduce the 29th Annual Jim C. Coleman Award to a full house at the annual Chamber Christmas Banquet on November 27th.

The award went to Clay and Janice Turner, the Turners are well-known, well-respected, and well deserving of the award. If there ever was a Metcalfe County power couple, it is the Turners.

This couple is active in church, they visit and take food to those who are sick or have lost loved ones. They visit the Nursing Homes and bring a smile to those who are shut in. Clay and Janice give back to their community in so many ways.

They volunteer their services to the Summer Shade Volunteer Fire Department, Metcalfe County Relay for Life, Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce, Founder’s Day, and Branstetter Park Celebrations. Clay has been the Official Driver for the Honorary Mayor on Founder’s Day and the Grand Marshal for the Metcalfe County Christmas Parade. Clay chauffeurs them through the parade route in his famous 1972 red convertible Volkswagen.

The couple both work on projects that they donate for local auctions, benefits, and multiple Chamber events. Clay and Janice helped raise money again this year for The Hoss 99.1 Fundraiser for the local Nursing Home. Janice baked over 50 pecan pies and the money from the sales went toward Christmas gifts for the residents. Janice bakes them and Clay delivers them, it’s a joint effort.

To share a bit more about this extraordinary couple, Clay served his country and is an Army Veteran. He played a major part in the Summer Shade Baptist Church renovation and is known for lending a helping hand to friends and neighbors in need at a moment’s notice.

Janice hosts a soup dinner for approximately 40 friends and neighbors once a year just to show she cares. Janice was the Hometown Hero in December 2020 and served as Honorary Mayor for Summer Shade in 2020.

Congratulations to Clay and Janice Turner, they are truly deserving recipients!
