Thanksgiving has come and gone and it’s time to start getting into the Christmas spirit and the Edmonton-Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce, local clubs, and businesses are doing their part. Here is a list of local activities to get you ready for Christmas.

Live Nativity Scene

The first event of the season is being held by the Metcalfe County High School FCA students on Sunday, December 3rd from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You can witness a LIVE Nativity Scene with real animals on the front lawn at MCHS. The nativity scene is to raise funds for the FCA students to visit the Ark Encounter. The entrance fee is only $5 a car and donations are greatly appreciated.

Shop Around the Square

On Sunday, December 4th beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 5 p.m. is the annual Shop Around the Square. The event promotes shop local and the Chamber is giving away a total of $350 Metcalfe Money (1st, 2nd, 3rd) By getting your ticket punched at participating businesses, you can be entered into the drawing for Metcalfe Money.

Caroling for Christ will take place in the courtyard at 3 p.m. and local radio station 99.1 the Hoss will be live from the square.

Santa will be at the gazebo in the courthouse yard for photos with the kiddos, while Relay for Life will be lighting personalized lantern ornaments purchased in honor or memory of a loved one. The Love Lights the Tree ceremony starts at 4:45 p.m.

The City of Edmonton will host live music beginning at 4 p.m. and the City Christmas Tree lighting will occur at 5 p.m. and hot cider and cookies will be served at City Hall.

Run / Walk / 5K / Fun Run

The 3rd Annual Rock Around the Christmas Tree run/walk, 5K, and fun run will take place in conjunction to Shop Around the Square. Registration begins at 4:45 p.m. in the courthouse lawn. When the city Christmas tree lights up, the run/walk participants begins. The event honors the Ironman Foundation and is FREE for all ages. The run/walk is not timed. Runners will take laps around the square at their own pace following the Peppermint signs from the square down the 3 lane toward Ace Hardware. Please wear headlamps and lots of lights, reflectors, and reflective clothing since the event is at night.

Christmas Parade

This year’s Christmas Parade will be Saturday, December 9th at 5 p.m. and the theme is “a parade of beloved Christmas shows and movies”. The grand marshal will be local bull rider, Connor Jessee. Last year’s first nighttime parade was a tremendous hit and this year is expected to be just as grand.

There is no entry fee, only Christmas music can be played, and no fake Santa’s are allowed. The parade lines up and leaves from the elementary school and circles the square. The end of the parade is the fire truck and ladder bringing (the real) Santa for an early visit.
