Sue R. Bunnell
Sue R. Bunnell was born on October 12, 1940 in Hart County. Growing up, she was surrounded by love and support from her mother, Marj Handy, her grandparents, Mom and Pop Handy, and her Uncle Roy and Aunt Pauline Overfelt. On November 10, 2023, she left this earth peacefully to be with her Savior.
Sue is survived by her husband of 63 years, Sydney M. Bunnell. They shared a love story like none other and a life of serving the Lord at the Horse Cave Church of Christ. They were devoted to each other and to their family. Sue is survived by two children, Kim Bunnell of Lexington and Kellie Long (Ricky) of Glasgow, two grandsons, Colby Long (Madelaine), and Tanner Long (Claudia), and one great-grandson, Beckham.
Sue worked in the banking industry for 44 years. She retired as CEO/President of Kentucky Banking Centers. She was a member of the Kentucky Women’s Banking Association, Horse Cave Rotary Club, Horse Cave Industrial Foundation and Hart County Chamber of Commerce. She worked tirelessly in helping to improve the community by helping to start the Hart County Leadership Program, fundraising for Horse Cave Theatre and working with the local high schools’ leadership program, APES. She was instrumental in decorating the town for Christmas and rallying the troops for the annual Tobacco festival. She was the first to volunteer and to get her friends and coworkers involved, too. She just made Horse Cave a brighter and better place with her spirit.
She was the perfect example for how to be a Christian, a wife, a mom, a grandparent, a great-grandparent, a businesswoman, and a friend. God’s gain is our loss. However, as she always said, “I know I’ll see you all later,” and we know we will.
A memorial service will be held at 12 PM on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the Horse Cave Church Of Christ with a service to follow at the Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Horse Cave Church of Christ from 5-8 PM on Monday, November 13, 2023, and from 10 AM – 12 PM on Tuesday, November 14.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UK Markey Cancer Foundation or the Horse Cave Church of Christ.
