Trojans whip Wildcats 40-22

By T. Wampler, Jobe Sports

The Barren County Trojans overcame four fumbles to whip the Trigg County Wildcats 40-22 in the Trojan Trail Turf War. The Trojan defense helped by coming up with three interceptions. And in a game that seemed destined to be determined by big plays and big players, the Trojans had more than their fair share.

BCHS quarterback, Tate Spillman, was at the head of the class of Trojan big players on offense, but he had help including running back Austin Sewell and several receivers as Spillman spread the football around in the passing game.

Spillman’s 58-yard touchdown scamper on an option read late in the 4th quarter helped seal the victory. Spillman rushed for 125 yards and scored 2 touchdowns, but none more important than his second with 4:37 left in the game.

Just prior to the final BCHS score, Dakota Wade’s interception on the 42-yard line gave Coach Tommy Muse and his Trojans a little breathing room, but when Spillman hit paydirt, every Trojan fan breathed a little easier.

Wade’s interception came just after Dalton Garmon had made a great catch and run, but a Wildcat defensive player stripped the football at the end of the run.

Kody Kerney scored the final Trojan TD with 1:07 left in the game on a 20-yard run for the 40-22 win.

Hadley Adams was 4 of 6 on her PAT kicks, nailing the last three straight on the three straight Trojan scores to end the game.

It was not just the offense that made big plays. The Trojans defense had their big game players too.

Trigg won the toss but Spillman proved his value on the other side of the football when he came up with an interception. Austin Sewell ran in from 3 yards out for the first Trojan score.

Missed tackles gave the Wildcats their first TD and the lead. After a successful 2-point try, TCHS led at 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Spillman connected with Cash Moore on their next possession, but the drive came up empty when the Trojans fumbled for the first time.

Jonathan Wilson sacked the Wildcat QB to help force a punt. Spillman and Moore connected again to set up a 15-yard score by Sewell and BCHS led 13-8 with 3:27 left in the half.

TCHS scored on a QB sneak to give the Wildcats a 14-13 lead at halftime.

Another BCHS fumble gave TCHS the football to start the 3rd quarter, but Dalton Garmon got the Trojans the football back with an interception. Facing 4th and 7 on the 20-yard line, Spillman hit Brey Bewley with a TD pass. Spillman took a big hit just as he released the football and Bewley made an incredible catch to give the Trojans a 19-14 lead.

Trigg retook the lead 22-19.

Spillman completed a nice pass to Jaxson Byrd for a 36-yard pickup. Spillman used his legs on a broken play setting up Sewell’s 2nd TD run of the night. BCHS 26 TCHS 22.

A Brayden Houchens and a Byrd tackle helped BCHS take over on downs setting up the late game heroics by the Trojans to win 40-22.
