Special to the Herald-News

Last Monday was special. Another first occurred in Edmonton when Michael Arnold opened the doors of his new business MyDefense giving Edmonton its very first martial arts studio.

Over the last several months, many of you have probably noticed the old Nunn’s Drugs building undergoing a transformation. A lot of time and labor have gone into repairing the building which had been neglected for many years.

With the renovation finally complete, Michael Arnold opened his martial arts studio to the public on July 31st and August 1st.

Arnold who is from Arkansas began his martial arts training as a child. His father, who was in the Airforce, held a Black Belt and competed in tournaments.

Through the years, Arnold has trained in many different styles Daito-Ryu, Aiki-jitsu, Kobudo, Shinkendo, Weeping Style Jujitsu, Isshin-ryu Karate, Filipino Stick fighting, Jujitsu, Knife fighting, and Judo. He worked as a Security Guard for many years while also training police officers and security guards in restraint techniques.

He will be teaching a variety of the techniques he has learned throughout his years of training. There are classes for children or adults from Monday through Thursday. He is also open to anyone with a specific class request. The fee for a child is $75 per month and for an adult $100 per month.

The MyDefense sign is up and the studio is open. The newly renovated building looks amazing. Photo | Facebook MyDefense Martial Arts Studio
