James William “Jimmy” Coffey

GLASGOW – James William (Jimmy) Coffey, 68, originally from Leemaster, Virginia, now residing in Glasgow, Kentucky, unexpectedly passed peacefully in his sleep on June 12, 2023.

Jimmy was born on June 23, 1954, to Mildred Geraline Baldwin Coffey and Wade Suddreth Coffey. Jimmy often proudly shared that he was born at home for $50 and a cherry pie made by his mom. Jimmy was always very proud of his roots.

Following Jimmy’s graduation from Grundy Senior High School in 1972, he attended Radford University where he received his degree in Business and earned his Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.). He started his first job at Carl Puckett’s accounting firm and then spent his career as a business manager at Keen Mountain Correctional Center located in Oakwood, Virginia. In 2014, Jimmy and Ruby moved to Glasgow, Kentucky, to be closer to family.

Jimmy was a devoted father, husband, and Pop-Pop. His girls were his world. He also loved animals of all kinds, and they loved him back. One of his many joys was caring for his dog, Chip. He was often busy cooking for his friends and family. He took great joy in making Ruby her favorite foods and cooking large meals at family get-togethers which were met with rave reviews. Jimmy was one of the most knowledgeable people you will ever meet. He never stopped learning and had a genuine curiosity for the world around him. You could learn something every time you spoke to Jimmy. He was loved by his friends and family and will be truly missed.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his loving mother, father, and his brother, Randall Wade Coffey of Grundy, Virginia, as well as many loving pets who were lucky to have Jimmy as their caretaker.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Ellen Coffey from Grundy, Virginia now residing in Glasgow, Kentucky and their daughters, Kathleen Coffey (Nick) Thompson and Molly Coffey (Brandon) Woods; granddaughter, Daphne Thompson; sister, Deborah Kay Coffey (Ed) Icenhour; niece, Courtney Brook Belcher (Brian) Baker; nephew, Nicholas Russell (Courtney) Belcher; two aunts, Shirley Baldwin Horn and Katy Baldwin Stiltner; and many more family and friends.

A visitation will be held for family and friends at Hatcher-Saddler Funeral Home in Glasgow, Kentucky from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, June 16. A funeral will be held at Hatcher-Saddler Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023.
