Hayes selected to lead Caverna Football
By Chris Summers
Colonel alumni Trevent Hayes was named the new head coach of the Caverna football program after choosing to return home and take the reigns of the program.
Caverna football has had an up-and-down history but their alumni have a deep running pride and commitment to the school and the program.
Hayes is a 1993 Caverna graduate and a well-known staple in the community. As a player, Hayes led the state in receiving in 1992 before going on to play college football at Union College and Sue Bennett College. He has been involved in Caverna sports for many years. He was the offensive coordinator for the middle school program from 2005-2010 and served as Caverna Middle School head coach from 2020-2022 before leaving to spend last fall as assistant coach of the Hart County High School team. He was also voted 2022 Regional Coach of the Year.
Hayes is known locally as the owner of Hayes Brothers Funeral Chapel in Glasgow and proprietor of Tee Time Grill in Hart County. He also was chosen in 2022 by the Kiwanis Club of Caverna to be a part of the Caverna High School Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame.
When asked about coming back to Caverna, Hayes said, “This wasn’t something planned or that I even desired initially but when the opportunity arose and the public started asking me to apply, I prayerfully decided to move forward in the process.”
“My biggest goal is organization and discipline in the program and of course ultimately I want to win. I believe we have the pieces to be contenders in our district,” Hayes added.
Hayes takes over a Colonel program that finished the 2023 season at 3-7; however, he has a group of players that he had great success with as a middle school team and looks forward to seeing those players progress.
