Policy update for Letters to the Editor

The Edmonton Herald-News has had the same verification process in place for 30 years for our Letters to the Editors section. We get e-mails and follow up with communication either in person or through electronic communication. In today’s high-tech world and with easy access to establishing fake accounts and false identities, it has come to our attention that we must do more.

E-mails through our website come with IP addresses and e-mails and were automatically placed in our production files.

This will now require a manager to sign off for approval. We apologize that it appears in recent weeks two have slipped through regarding the mayor of Edmonton and for this, we apologize. We will use this example to ensure it doesn’t happen in Edmonton as well as the other communities we serve.

Sincerely,

Allyson Dix

News Director
