On March the 27 of 2021, the Barren County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on North Lucas Road in reference to an unresponsive 19-month-old male.

The child was transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and was later pronounced deceased.

That same day, officers observed suspicious bruising on the head of the child and sent the child to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville for an autopsy. The results of the autopsy determined the child died from blunt impact injuries of the head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

An extensive year-long investigation ensued.

On Friday, May 27, 2022, the Barren County Sheriff’s Office served four indictment warrants after the grand jury returned indictments.

Devin Pierce and Serenity Brown were charged with Murder. Jessica and Marty Brown, the parents of Serenity Brown, were charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence.

The BCSO released this additional information, relating the cause of death for the child, after conferring with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. No further information will be released pending court action.
