It’s that time of year again; Time to sign your child up for the Summer Reading Program at the MCPL. This year’s theme is Tails and Tales.

“Our Summer Reading program is designed to help motivate children to read, as well as develop a positive attitude about reading, books, and the library,” said Ashley Holley, children’s librarian.

“The program provides access to experiences through which children can learn.”

Kids of all ages (0-18) may participate, because those not yet able to read may participate by having an adult read to them.

“For every title read, kids fill out a ticket for the grand prize drawings.”

As always, the list of grand prizes is extensive! (*See a complete list at the end of this story.)

Anyone who wishes to participate must register. Online Registration begins June 7th, and in-person / curbside registration begins June 16th.

In addition to a spectacular list of prizes suitable for children in each age category, the library will offer a list of associated events to enthrall young minds.

The Kick-Off Event is June 12th, 10:00 – 3:00, in the library parking lot.

There children may sign up for Summer Reading, checkout from the bookmobile, or get a library card.

“We’ll have popcorn, drinks, crafts, and giveaways for all ages! We’ll also have a special visit from a “groovy” blue cat!”

Every Monday during Summer Reading MCPL will be releasing a new episode of Checkers Library TV on our social media and website.

“Also, each Monday during Summer Reading we will have a new craft available for pick up (while supplies last) that will correspond with that week’s episode of Checkers TV,” said Holley.

On August 13th, 12:00 – 2:30 the library is partnering with Bowling Park. Summer Reading participants will receive a free, small snow cone from Tropical Breeze Shaved Ice, and Snack Shack, and pick up your summer reading prizes. “Every Summer Reading participant will receive an incentive prize,” said Holley.

“Kids can also a visit around Bowling Park’s walking trail while participating in our Story Walk, featuring the book “In a Small, Small Pond” by Denise Fleming.”

Grand prize drawings will take place at 2:30 and will also be live streamed via Facebook.

There will also be a Teens Only Event for participant’s age 11-18, Friday, July 9th. “Join us at Metcalfe County’s own nature conservancy, the Dry Fork Gorge, located off Branstetter Rd in Edmonton,” said Holley. Registration is required to participate.

Children will also have many opportunities to “cook with the cat”.

Cooking with the Cat is a fun, hands-on program presented in partnership with the Extension Office that includes learning basic kitchen skills.

The dates are: July 13th, 20th, 27th, August 3rd, and 10th at 10:00. This event will require a separate registration.
