The Metcalfe County Young Republicans’ Club is offering a $500 scholarship to one MCHS senior seeking to further their education. All of the organization has been very active in the community over the past two years, this is the first time they’ve had the opportunity to provide a scholarship.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer a scholarship. It’s one part of various plans we hope to be able to carry out for our community moving forward. Obviously, current circumstances have limited or postponed many events,” said MCYR information officer, TJ Morgan.

“This scholarship is only possible because of the overwhelming turnout, support, and generosity we saw out our Reagan Day Dinner.” Morgan added that despite current circumstances, they hope to soon be able to host another Reagan Day Dinner.

Scholarship applicants are asked a specific question regarding America and American history, including three key points:

In 500 words or less, discuss your support or opposition of Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety,” and describe the relevance of his words in the present day.

In 100 words or less, communicate your future plans after high school as thoroughly as possible.

In 100 words or less, articulate why you should be chosen for this scholarship.

“It’s important for our younger generation to realize that all decisions have a trade-off. Before making a decision it’s important we consider both the pros and cons of it. At times, unintended consequences are very hard to see. When the government acts in the name of safety, we want young people to be able to identify what that means for their future liberty,” said Morgan.

Please include your name and preferred method of contact. Applicants can email completed essays in Microsoft Word format to metcalfeyoungrepublicans@gmail.com.

The winner must be a senior at MCHS seeking any post-secondary education.

Winners agree to the publication of their selection and their answers (partially or in totality) on social media, mass media, and other means the organization decides to use for publication.

The deadline for responses is February 12, 2021. The scholarship recipient will be announced on March 1, 2021.

The scholarship recipient will have two weeks to claim scholarship funds.
