Ever since Katie Elder-Smith was seven years old, she knew she wanted to be a hairdresser.

“I loved my hairdresser growing up, so she inspired me, and I love to make people feel good about themselves, so it’s a win-win,” she said.

However, like many small business owners and operators, 2020 has been full of uncertainty.

Instead of shrinking in fear about the future, Smith decided it was time to make changes.

“There was a time I would have told you that I would never work from home,” she said.  “And then life happened.”

For the past several years, Katie has been part owner of Polished Salon and Spa in Edmonton. But with regulations tightening, and being a mom of school-aged boys, she realized that it was time to bring her beauty clientele to her new home-based salon, Katie’s Place.

“We’ve all been turned upside down this year, but through it all, I am choosing joy,” she said.

Katie’s Place opened the doors in early November. With a steady client base, business was certain and Smith is pleased with her new location. She has worked hard at creating a cozy, welcoming space for her customers.

“Honestly my heart has been so full from just being content in my own space,” Smith said.

Smith has been a hairdresser for 12 years, so this is not a new journey, but rather, the beginning of a new path on the journey. “My love only continues to grow for my clients and the industry,” she said.

It’s been positive from a family standpoint as well.

“This year has been so crazy, but focusing on the good, and all that being at home with my two little boys has brought me- I can’t help but feel so much gratefulness. I hope my heart shows through in my work.”
