Coach Whitney Estes and the Lady Hornets volleyball are excited about the 2019 season. “The season started out pretty good so far,” Estes began. “Our girls are positive with their attitudes and they have come out strong and ready to play this year.”

Estes says one reason they have started strong this year is her two seniors, Konner Gallagher, and Kelsey Fields. “They are excellent leaders that stay positive and are good about encouraging others,” Estes said describing her senior duo. “They are both really good girls…all around and well balanced in school athletics and academics, in life. I will truly miss them when they are gone.”

“They mean a lot to this team too,” Estes added.

Last season, the Lady Hornets finished 8 – 20 overall, 4 –       11 in Region 4 action and 2 – 6 in District 16. Estes and the Lady Hornets hope to improve on that mark and have double-digit wins in 2019.

“We really think we can win more games and have a strong season,” Estes said. “Our district is tough, but we have the potential to win more district games too.”

Estes says they “let a few games get away from them last year.” “We had some close games we could have won, and I hope this year we will do better in those tight games,” she added.

“I do feel like our serving is one of our strengths so far early in the season,” Estes continued discussing her team so far in 2019. “We are trying to move the ball around a little more…using or trying to locate in different spots and that’s helped us.”

Estes uses a one-setter rotation but has several girls that she can use. “Sometimes it may seem like a crazy mess but its working,” she said of mixing up her setters. “It is nice having more than one player that can set and hit. We have some talent.”

Estes says having a “feeder program” has helped the varsity level play. “I have been involved with volleyball just about ever since I got out of school and I can see a difference since we started a middle school program,” she said. “Being able to play at the middle school, and then on the freshmen team and JV just helps make our varsity better.”

Knowing the fundamentals allows her to spend more time coaching, a fact she appreciates.

“I really like this group, this mix of girls,” Estes concluded. “We’ve played well so far against some good teams and that has given us confidence. We just need to keep working hard and stay focused. I think this team will do just that.”
