The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

Board members approved a health care contract with TJ Regional Health, Inc., a sports medicine service agreement with TJ Samson Community Hospital, and contracts with the Barren River Health Department for two school nurses.

In addition, the board approved the second reading of the KSBA 2019-2020 Policy Update and Notification of Procedure Update. Those policies include a new state law that prohibits the use of tobacco products, alternative tobacco products, and vapor products on school grounds, in school vehicles, and at school activities.

The board recognized 10-year-old Elyda Hicks as Student of the Month. Elyda’s artwork won first place at the National Junior Beta Club Convention in Oklahoma City. It is reportedly the first time a Metcalfe student has earned the nationwide first place. Elyda will be entering the 5th grade at Metcalfe County Elementary School this fall.

Dr. Benny Lile commented, “We’ve had a number of finalists this year in Jr Beta and Sr Beta both. A lot of top 10’s, a lot of students we’re very proud of, but to be number one in the nation is just an unbelievable accomplishment.”

The board also recognized Employee of the Month Torrie Osbon. Torrie is the district’s grant writer and public relations director. In the past three years, she has helped secure a total of $2,046,931 dollars in grant funds for the district, $700,502 of which was awarded this past fiscal year. That is an amazing 77 percent award rate for grants she has written for the school system. She currently has grant applications pending totaling $123,635.

Dr. Lile also noted the public relations work that Osbon does. “If you’re on Facebook, Twitter, any of the social media you’ve seen the work that she does. You’ve seen the work that she does with our web site and you’ve seen the information that gets put out.”

Board recognitions are sponsored by Alliance Corporation, RBS Design Group, and Glass & Thompson Insurance.

The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2019, at 5:30 pm at the Metcalfe County Board of Education on West Stockton Street.
