The Plaza and Far Off Broadway sets tone for growth
By JEFF JOBE
Without a doubt, the heart of our community is our downtown life. I have written it before and I still believe that if there is not life and activity after 5:00 p.m. on our downtown sidewalks and areas located around the squares then we are a dying community.
Living together and sharing life is what it is all about. A rich and growing community is motivated and organized for a common goal of promoting who we are and diversifying who we can become.
This is why a group of us are creating a Downtown Association of Businesses, property owners, residents and volunteers who feel they might have something to offer in helping us grow the quality of life and our economic stability.
Yancey’s Gastropub and Brewery will be hosting our first organizational meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 5:00 pm. This open house, meet and greet will be nothing more than showing up, saying we all love Glasgow, and are willing to help one another make our community better.
For years, the beautiful Downtown Plaza Theatre has partnered with the wonderful group of volunteers from the Far Off Broadway Players. Their productions are amazing and they alone wake up a large section of downtown with each performance.
This past weekend our downtown saw some 1500 people come to town, have dinner, attend a live performance, and perhaps even stick around for a drink and an overnight stay.
This was made possible by Carolyn Glodfelter and dozens of her volunteers for the Plaza Theatre and the cast of Far Off Broadway Players rendition of Steel Magnolias, Aliea Garner, Jessica Gilbert, Deeann Slinker-Phelps, Leah White, Julie Adkins, and Peggy Goodman; and the technical and backstage crew of Tracy Martin, Zack McDaniel, Kaity Martin and Zach Harper.
Just imagine what we can do if we all work together in helping Glasgow become a destination.
