Governor Bevin and First Lady Bevin Announce Exciting Results of Shop and Share 2019

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 5, 2019) – Governor Matt Bevin and First Lady Glenna Bevin today joined community partners at The Center for Women and Families in Louisville to announce the exciting results of the Shop and Share 2019 fundraiser for domestic violence shelters in the Commonwealth.

Shoppers at more than 120 Kroger and other grocery stores across Kentucky donated $592,088 in supplies and funds during the one-day goods drive on Saturday, Feb. 2 — bringing the event’s 10-year total to more than $5.2 million!

“Domestic violence is a significant issue impacting our state and our nation, and shelters are a vital link in helping women to escape their circumstances and begin rebuilding their lives,” said First Lady Glenna Bevin. “Kentuckians have rallied together to donate more than $5.2 million over the past decade to this important cause. We are grateful for their generosity — and for the dedication of all our partners and volunteers who have made Shop and Share so successful.”

On Shop and Share day, volunteers at Kroger, Food City, Super Dollar, IGA, and Save-A-Lot stores provided a list of items needed at Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence (KCADV) shelters. These items include non-perishable foods, school supplies, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.

“At Kroger, our purpose is to ‘feed the human spirit,’ and we do that by taking care of the communities we serve,” said Erin Grant, corporate affairs manager for Kroger’s Louisville division. “I cannot imagine a worthier organization to support than the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence or a better partner than our First Lady, Glenna Bevin. Shop and Share means so much to our teams, and they are dedicated to its success.”

Organizational partners for Shop and Share include the First Lady’s Office, KCADV, Kroger, Food City, Super Dollar, IGA, Save-A-Lot, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council, and Kentucky’s Drug Court.

“We know that one in three women will experience abuse in her lifetime. When victims come to shelter, often with their children, they are escaping violence and starting over,” said KCADV president Tanya Thomas, of Elizabethtown. “The goods collected during Shop and Share will allow us to stock our shelves and provide much-needed help to survivors.”

“Shop and Share helps stock our shelter shelves for a majority of the year here at The Center,” said Elizabeth Wessels-Martin, president and chief empowerment officer for The Center for Women and Families. “Last year we served 750 adults and children in shelter, and without generous donations of goods, we would not be able to provide all that we do for these individuals affected by violence. We are grateful to live in such a giving community and thankful that the Governor and First lady have continued this tradition.”
