Safe haven for wildlife

Monofilament is a danger to the environment, if not exposed of properly. The fishing line takes hundreds of years to decompose. What this means is if the lines are not disposed of properly, they can put animals in grave danger. Most fishing line bought today is made of this type of material. Due to the line being so thin and clear, animals may not see it until they quickly become entangled in a dangerous web they cannot break from.

Edmonson County Technical College student Devin White is part of the newly-formed fishing club for the school. They have quickly taken action with community projects and outreach. One of the most recent is the creation of recycling bins for fishing lines. He plans to set up bins along Nolin Lake and raise awareness about the importance of this type of disposal. The bins will be adorned with signage that explains the purpose of this campaign. White hopes to be able to melt the collected line down and turn it into fishing lures the group could sell.
